Beyond the Microphone
Dr. Michael Anthony Ingram and the Power of Giving Men a Voice
Poetry. Cultural memory. Emotional truth. A global conversation about what it means to be heard.

The person behind the platform
A life shaped by listening
For Dr. Michael Anthony Ingram, poetry is more than performance. It is a way to honor the stories people carry, especially those that rarely find a public platform.
A retired professor, performance poet, certified life coach, and founder of Quintessential Poetry Network, Ingram has built his creative life around listening, connection, and the dignity of being heard. His experience in education informs how he approaches language, identity and community. He also founded the DC Poetry Project, Inc., to help build space for creative expression.
The featured initiative

THE GLOBAL ANTHOLOGY
Men in Poetry
A global anthology of men’s voices, told through identity, vulnerability and cultural memory.
This is the project Ingram specifically asked KVI Network to highlight. The anthology and multimedia initiative brings together men whose poetry reflects emotional truth, personal experience and the desire to be understood beyond traditional expectations.
For Ingram, the work is about creating a place where men can speak honestly, and where listeners can encounter the humanity behind the words.
The conversation
In his own words
Selected questions and excerpts from Dr. Ingram’s October 9, 2026 spotlight submission.
What has your journey taught you?
Ingram describes the importance of being “ungoverned” creatively: trusting his own instincts without waiting for traditional validation.
“I’ve learned that my work doesn’t need permission, precedent, or alignment with established pathways to be meaningful.”
Does art have to earn money to matter?
He challenges the assumption that creative work should be measured only by financial return. Sustainability matters, he explains, but so do community, connection and transformation.
Why create the Quintessential Poetry Podcast?
He wanted a space where people could speak without being rushed, reduced or overlooked, and where a poem could open the door to a deeper conversation about the life behind it.
Where should new listeners begin?
He recommends Genevieve F. Ray’s episode followed by the Timeless Classics series, which brings poetry and personal storytelling together.
What advice would you give independent creatives?
“Build slowly, intentionally, and without rushing toward perfection. Consistency matters more than speed.” He emphasizes finding a community that supports growth.
What deserves more attention?
The care and listening that happen behind the scenes. Ingram says the unseen work of shaping conversations matters as much as the public performance.
Beyond the anthology
Let Poetry Ring
Ingram continues developing spoken-word projects, including Let Poetry Ring: Conversations, and a Black Mythology poetry cycle blending cultural memory, imagination and lived experience.
His wider mission is consistent: to create space for stories that connect people across borders and experiences.
