What I Believe About Life

Writing Prompt
If you had to sum up your life philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?
My response: Life is about learning who I am, being honest about who I’m becoming, treating people with dignity, and leaving something worthwhile behind.
What That Means to Me
It’s easy to come up with a sentence about life. Living by it is another matter.
I’ve changed my mind about things over the years. I’ve learned that having strong beliefs doesn’t mean I have every answer. Sometimes I need to listen longer, ask a better question, or admit that I could have handled something differently. That’s not always comfortable, but I think it’s necessary.
I value faith, but I also believe in thinking for myself. I value respect, but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with everyone. And I believe in being accountable, even when it would be easier to explain away a mistake.
Writing has made me pay closer attention to what people say and what they leave unsaid. It has also reminded me that words can sound impressive without meaning much. I’d rather have my actions support what I believe than write a beautiful sentence I don’t practice.
I’m still learning. I expect I always will be. I don’t see that as a problem. For me, the point isn’t to become someone who never gets anything wrong. It’s to keep growing without forgetting how to treat people along the way.
