Journey to the Temple of Dawn

THE READING ROOM
The costume rental business at the temple was clearly a well-oiled machine. Because competition was fierce, the vendors acted as scouts, greeting tourists at the pier to guide them back to their small enterprise. We followed our sales lady a plump, matriarchal woman with kind eyes away from the main gateway toward a quieter entrance.
Her shop was bigger than the rest, boasting a breathtaking kaleidoscope of Thai pleated sashes and sarongs in every imaginable colour tone. The shop offered a dazzlingly complete transformation: hair styling, traditional makeup, period-accurate footwear, ornamental parasols, and even a professional photographer. For an extra fifty dollars, they provided a dedicated camera-wielding shadow who knew every secret, sun-drenched angle of the temple grounds, promising hundreds of high quality memories to take home.
Because the afternoon was bleeding into evening, the usual frantic rush of tourists had cleared out. The sprawling shop was suddenly ours alone just my dad, myself, and a room full of waiting silks.
“That powder blue would look lovely against your skin, dear,” the shop owner suggested, noticing my hesitation as I lingered before the racks. But my eyes had already drifted away, captured by a solitary garment displayed in a glass case deeper within the shop. It stood apart exquisitely preserved, radiating an entirely different calibre of artistry. The fabric was not the standard, faded silk of the tourist rentals; it was a heavy, lustrous textile dyed in a rich, sophisticated lotus-petal pink.
It was the exact, elusive hue of the jewellery box housing my black opal. I stepped toward it, almost hypnotized, and ran my fingertips over the cloth. The silk was dense and luxurious, catching the dimming light with an intricate constellation of hand stitched sequins that shimmered like stardust. “ What about this one?” I asked, my hand resting against the folds of the captivating pink sash.
“ Ah, that one,” the owner said, her eyes gleaming with a seasoned vendor ‘s intuition. “That is from our premium collection. It is brand new, woven from higher quality silk, and entirely hand embroidered. Naturally, the price reflects it. To rent that piece is eight hundred baht. Are you interested?” Eight hundred Baht! roughly forty Australian dollars, four times the cost of the standard outfits.
Yet, an inexplicable, magnetic pull tugged at my core, silencing any practical second thoughts. “Yes,” I said firmly. “I ‘ll take the premium lotus pink.” My father didn’t bat an eye at the sudden upgrade. He simply nodded, his gaze lingering on the vibrant silk with quiet approval. When the vendor asked if we required the services of their personal photographer, Dad nodded again, reaching for his wallet.
He joked that a life spent in the subterranean darkness of the Lightning Ridge mines hadn’t exactly blessed him with an eye for framing the perfect portrait. I was led into a small, changing room where two assistants awaited. They worked with the swift, practiced synchronicity of artisans, pinning, tucking, and dressing until it conformed flawlessly to my silhouette. Next came the traditional adornments: ornate brass bracelets, heavy drop earrings, and a succession of rings.
Within ten minutes, the transformation was complete. When I stepped out, my father gasped, whispering that I looked exactly like an ancient Thai lady stepped down from a mural. But the moment the silk settled against my skin, a strange, heavy energy seemed to ripple through the air. The stylist swept my hair upward, anchoring it into a flawless, traditional Thai bun. Looking into the mirror, a thrill of disbelief ran through me.
The reflection looking back wasn’t the university graduate from Australia; it was a woman who belonged to antiquity period. Suddenly, a faint, ethereal melody drifted through the room. It was the distinct, percussive chime of a traditional Thai xylophone accompanied by the mournful, reedy sigh of a flute and the distant, rhythmic pulse of a drum. The music seemed to bleed out from the very walls of the shop.
Did the assistants hear it? Did my father? I searched their faces, but everyone remained perfectly ordinary, unaffected, hurrying to gather our things. We were racing against the fading evening light, yet the ancient rhythm grew louder in my ears. I couldn’t tell if the melody belonged to the bustling streets of Bangkok, or if I was the only one who could hear it, echoing across the span of a century.
