The Best of My Country — Portugal

Paula Cristina Silva Oliveira

Portugal is small, almost like a quiet corner of Europe, but it carries a deep and steady soul. The best thing about my country is not just one place or one tradition—it is the feeling of belonging that lives in simple moments.

In the early morning, I hear the soft clatter of cups in a local café, where people greet each other without hurry. The smell of fresh bread and strong coffee fills the air. Someone always says “bom dia” as if it truly matters.

By the sea, the wind tastes like salt and memory. Families walk slowly, talking about life as the waves repeat their endless song. There is a calm rhythm here, something patient and real.

We are a people of saudade—of remembering, even while living. In our food, our voices, our silences, there is warmth.

Portugal may be small on the map, but inside, it feels vast and deeply human.

Belonging in the Smallest Moments

The first thing I noticed in Paula’s writing was how little she needed to describe to make Portugal feel familiar. A greeting in a café, the smell of fresh bread, the sound of cups in the morning. I have never needed to know someone’s whole history to understand how much an ordinary place can mean to them.

I particularly like her attention to the words “bom dia.” It is such a simple greeting, yet the way we speak to one another can tell a story about the kind of community we hope to build. As someone who thinks often about relationships and culture, I read this as an invitation to notice the kindness that can exist in small daily encounters.

And then there is saudade. I would not pretend that one sentence could capture everything the word means in Portuguese life. What Paula gives us instead is a feeling I can recognize: memory living alongside the present, not replacing it. Her portrait leaves me wondering which everyday details we would choose if someone asked us to describe home.

The Sea Between Us, and What Connects Us

Coming from the Virgin Islands, I paid particular attention to Paula’s description of the sea. An ocean can mark distance between countries, but it also carries generations of movement, trade, stories, and memories. Portugal and the Caribbean do not share one history, and I do not want to pretend our differences disappear simply because both places face the Atlantic.

What caught my attention was her understanding of belonging. She does not measure her country’s value by its physical size. Instead, she writes about how people live, remember, greet one another, and carry their culture forward. That challenged me to think about how often we describe a place by what visitors can see rather than what its people experience.

From a philosophical perspective, there is something worth examining here: is home simply a place we occupy, or is it also a relationship we build with people, memory, and responsibility? Paula’s words lead me toward the second possibility. They remind me that we can respect the uniqueness of another culture while recognizing experiences that make us human.
