Final Results Are In: “Incarcerated” Writing Prompt Competition Recap

By KVI Network Creations Editorial Team

KVI Network Creations, in proud partnership with Krafty Page Chronicles and C.A.P.S. (Cultures of Art, Poetry & Stories), officially announces the final results of the “Incarcerated” Writing Prompt Competition—an initiative that challenged writers worldwide to explore themes of confinement in its many forms: physical imprisonment, mental barriers, societal shackles, and internal struggles.

From raw, honest poetry to deeply reflective prose, the submissions resonated powerfully, inviting readers to confront the realities behind incarceration.

How the Voting Worked

Each submission was publicly rated through a transparent 5-star system, evaluated on:

  • ★ Originality
  • ★ Emotional Impact
  • ★ Relevance to Theme
  • ★ Clarity & Structure
  • ★ Depth of Message

To promote equity, only the highest-rated submission per author qualified for the Top 3, allowing a broader recognition of diverse voices and minimizing vote stacking.

🥇 1st Place: “The Walls Speak” by Christian Joseph

8 votes | Average Rating: 5.0

Seems like my time has come
Cracks have grown too wide
Threatening to reveal what happens inside
Generations of hurt and pain
Joy and excitement
Loss and gain
Have lead to this moment
Where I can no longer protect those secrets again

I can hear death’s machinery
No doubt it’s here for me
But I’m not afraid
For I shall be reborn
And stand firmer in my place
To shield, to protect and to hide
Those very secrets they cannot keep inside

🥈 2nd Place: “The Walls Speak” by Nita L. Chase

20 votes | Average Rating: 4.8

I can still
feel
and read
your scribble
Your tears
and dribble
fill the cracks of me
And from my cracks
I see
You will be free
Literally
Life can’t bury you
in between these walls
Your voice escapes
echoing down halls
And I will be Jericho down
Defeated sound
Dust N ground
No longer erect as I witness
your freedom found.

🥉 3rd Place: “I Remember” by Vo Thi Nhu Mai

9 votes | Average Rating: 4.8

I am the ground at the gate of the market where shadows fall and hunger sticks around.
Today, a boy tried to steal xôi. A stick found him first.
The man beat him until he stopped moving.

I felt the weight of his tiny body against me, his fingers clutching a last lump of sticky rice.
His parents arrived too late. The mother wept, the father held him.
Together, they pried open his cold hand and ate.
Mouthfuls of grief.

I said nothing, but I remember it all—
the violence, the hunger, the love too slow to save.
I always remember.

Community Voices & Reflections

Linette Rabsatt, C.A.P.S. admin and Caribbean poet, reflected:

“This contest called on us to reflect on what incarceration really means. It was a pleasure looking through the various submissions from poets across the world on the topic. A poet’s voice is the voice of the people. I encourage writers to deeply consider prompts that are shared and use their words to inspire the masses.”

Linette Rabsatt is a Virgin Islands poet with roots in both the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. Writing since 1996, her works appear in her Kindle book Be Inspired: Poems, Pulse Poetry Magazine, Visual Verse, and Micromance Magazine. She was nominated for the 2024 National Spoken Words Award for Best International Artist and won the 2024 Read Yuh Ting TOO Virtual Caribbean Poetry Contest.

Nelly Vee shared his perspective on the contest’s impact:

“Writing about incarceration, I found the prompt to be a mirror reflecting not just physical prisons but mental barriers many face daily. This contest provided a platform for voices too often unheard and created community through shared storytelling. I encourage future participants to bring their authentic selves and continue pushing boundaries through words.”

Nelly Vee is founder and CEO of KVI Network Creations LLC, an author, publisher, and poet whose works blend prose and poetry to explore complex human themes with depth and authenticity.
