In the Heart of a Little Girl
If I could talk, then you would know I never wanted you to leave.
If I could walk, then you would know I would have followed everywhere you go.
If I could run, then you would know; after you, I would have chased.
Just to see your face another day.
Daddy, why did you leave me?
“I didn’t.”
Did I do something wrong?
“No, Princess.”
Was it my fault?
“No, baby girl.”
Do you still love me?
“Yes, my little love, my Princess Dove. Daddy has and will always love you.
You are too young to understand now. Relationships don’t always go the way we plan.
Regardless of what mom and dad go through, always remember it has nothing to do with you.
We still love you from that day you were conceived. We both will still love you for eternity; please believe.
You are our little star of light; you are our hope and dream, our joy. That’s how much to us you mean.
I feel the pain when I’m away, sharp pains in my heart; I cannot bear it when your beautiful face I cannot see.
Wishing to be there every day. Wishing that your mom and I will reunite, I pray.
You deserve better, my love. We will do better; you’ll see …”
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!
As I look towards the door.
“Is it my Daddy, Mum?”
If I could talk, then you would know.

Heart of a Little Girl, written by me and dedicated to my daughter, holds a profound meaning as both a father and a writer. It captures the raw emotions of love, loss, and resilience in a way that feels deeply personal. I drew inspiration from the complexities of being a parent, especially during times of distance or hardship. The longing in the child’s voice echoes moments in my own life when I’ve been apart from my children, yearning to reassure them of my love and presence despite the miles or circumstances between us. Every question the child asks in the poem mirrors the unspoken questions I imagine my daughter may have had at times, and the father’s response reflects the importance of offering constant reassurance, even in challenging situations.
Thank you to the creator of the picture used as a prompt for this piece; it helped bring these emotions to the surface, guiding the words into a reflection of hope and the enduring strength of parental love. Writing this was not just a creative process but also a healing one, reminding me that the bond I share with my daughter is unbreakable, no matter the obstacles life presents.
