Author Spotlight: D.A. Lewis

“Instead of using his disability as a crutch to gain sympathetic favors, he turned his disability into ability—a tool to inspire and encourage others who are going through something similar.”

Today’s Author Spotlight features: D.A. Lewis. With over 17 years of writing experience, Lewis began his journey as a hobbyist, later transforming it into a passion. His sophomore English teacher initially inspired him to write as an outlet for anger, but today, his greatest motivation comes from his daughter.

“Don’t feel bad for me… God brought me through, because it’s all proven.”

Entrepreneurial Ventures

D.A. Lewis is actively engaging with the public, running his own T-shirt brand priced at $10 each. Additionally, he and his daughter recently launched a homemade organic smoothie business, offering fresh fruit and vegetable blends for just $5.

Literary Influences

Among his literary influences are James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou, though his inspiration often stems from authors who resonate with him emotionally and mentally. Currently, he is working on his next book and plans to establish his own website.

Personal Message

Lewis wants his readers to know he is a single father with custody of his daughter, crafting poetry from personal experiences. He credits God, his parents, and his supporters for empowering him to use his talent to uplift others.

Background

Derrick Anderson Lewis was born on November 14, 1988, in Louisville, Kentucky, to his hardworking, single mother, Ms. Carmen Rochelle Lewis. At just six years old, Derrick was diagnosed with epilepsy, a condition so severe it could be life-threatening at any moment.

From ages 6 to 15, he experienced multiple seizures annually. His mother ultimately quit her job to care for him, as others were too afraid to handle his episodes. Teased and bullied relentlessly due to his condition, Derrick turned to poetry as an escape.

With his father absent—sentenced to prison four months before Derrick’s birth—he took on the responsibility of being the “man of the house” early on. He helped raise his younger sister, Gabby, who was six years his junior, becoming her protector and mentor. Derrick credits these experiences with shaping him into the father and man he is today.

Resilience and Success

Derrick’s journey is marked by resilience. Refusing to let his condition define him, he used his challenges to inspire others. Today, as the author of two books and a single father to a six-year-old daughter, Derrick continues to uplift those around him.

Books

His books, “The Realization of A Dream” and “Comin’ From Where I’m From”, are available on Lulu.com and other platforms nationwide.

“Don’t feel bad for me… God brought me through, because it’s all proven.”

We wish Derrick continued success and look forward to future updates.
